Objectives
• All students will prepare to write a book report
• All students will follow the five step writing process to complete a book report

CA ELA 8 Standards
Reading 3.2 Evaluate the structural elements of the plot
Writing 2.2 Write responses to literature:
a. Exhibit careful reading and insight in their interpretations.
b. Connect the student’s own responses to the writer’s techniques and to specific textual references.
c. Draw supported inferences about the effects of a literary work on its audience.
d. Support judgments through references to the text, other works, other authors, or to personal knowledge.

Introduction:

In this section, you will introduce the book. Write a hook. Make a statement, or ask a good open-ended question.
Summarize the book in one or two well crafted sentences.

Body:

Plot Details
In this section, write sentences about the book, including exposition, rising action, conflict, climax, and falling action. Include information about all significant sub-plots.

Major and Minor Characters
Write several paragraphs in which you discuss the character traits of both major and minor characters in your book. This includes real persons in books of non-fiction.

Setting
Time and Place

Theme
The morale of the story, the big lesson, the universal theme

Conclusion

Review and Recommend
Write several paragraphs in which you talk about how you liked the book. Would you recommend it to others? Give specific details (proof) of why you think that way. Use citations!

Glossary
Create a glossary of 10 new vocabulary words used in your book. Include the word, the page number on which it is found, the dictionary definition of the word, and quote how it is used in the sentence in the book.

For example:

Suspicion, (n.), page 81, under scrutiny, mistrust
“Someone must have come under suspicion.”
